Interview

How would you describe The Apocalypse Gene?

The Apocalypse Gene is a young adult urban fantasy with elements of dystopia, paranormal
romance and cyberpunk. It has magic, immortals, monsters, and mayhem,
The Apocalypse Gene takes place in the near future during a time of global pandemic. Our
protagonists (Olivya and Mikah) are a pair of highly gifted psychics, Olivya with aura-sight
and Mikah an elite Empath from a clan of demon hybrids, The Kindred. Mikah learns that the
Kindred are linked to the pandemic, but without initiation, he is barred from learning their truths.
When Olivya’s mother falls ill, Olivya and Mikah embark on a quest to uncover Kindred secrets.
In the shadow of the Kindred leader, a monstrous brooding immortal, and with the arrival of
a long prophesied winged being, the two discover that the pandemic is far more than a mere
disease.

Which of your characters do you feel you relate to the most and why?

Suki: I relate mostly to Olivya. I don’t see auras like she does, but I have fine-tuned intuition,
and I’m good at reading and interpreting people’s vibes. Olivya does this in a literal sense by
seeing emotions as colors.
Carlyle: For me, whichever character I'm writing or reading I seem to relate to most, but I'd
have to say Mikah. Although most of the time I'm as emotionally dunderheaded as any man, on
occasion I am exquisitely sensitive as Mikah. As a child I tried to influence the negative feelings
of those around me, but not having Mikah's powers, I generally tried for humor.

Were you a reader in your teen years and if so, who was your favorite author?

Suki: I could never get enough Stephen King. I grabbed each book the moment it appeared on
the book store or library shelves. Big mistake - reading Salem’s Lot while baby-sitting. A branch
outside was scraping the window. It was a vampire begging to be invited in. Really! It was!
Carlyle: Louis Lamour was my favorite. There was something about the simplicity of the
western and the strict honor of the heroes and sometimes even the villain, as well as the romance
of the open plains. That cowboy stuff called to me. Then I tried some cowboy stuff and it was
really, really hard so I went to college instead.

{Suki – Wow. I would say you have a lot of guts to be reading Stephen King at night alone with just you and the kids. He is too intense for me :] Carlyle – Even though I have never read Louis Lamour, I do however agree with you on the whole Western atmosphere and I think it is awesome that you actually tried to be a cowboy!}

What one 2011 release are you most looking forward to reading this year?

Suki: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. This tag line hooked me: Within the black-and-
white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is
called Le Cirque des RĂªves, and it is only open at night.
Carlyle: A Red Country by Joe Abercrombie. Abercrombie's combination of grim humor, action,
and interpersonal character-driven fantasy makes him one of the few authors whose novels I will
buy the day they come out. Though I do read dark books, the ones I read again and again always
have humor in them. We also used humor in The Apocalypse Gene to counter the gloom and
tension and make it a fun read.

{Suki – I agree with you this book looks and sounds A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! Carlyle – I have never heard of this book or author, but it sounds neat.}

Are you currently in the process of writing a sequel or newer book?

We’re in the drafting phase of the sequel to The Apocalypse Gene. We both have other novels in
the works too, one of which, Carlyle’s The Black Song Inside is almost finished. Very exciting!

{AWESOME!!! I cannot wait!}

  1. I loved the interview! Though I didn't grow up reading Stephen King... I was still freaked out by the stories my sisters would tell me about his books. :D I'm a new follower! <3
