{Review+Giveaway} April’s Baby–Beatles Cloth Diaper

While surfing around the web one night I came across this adorable little diaper that was created by April at April’s Baby. After emailing and working things out with April, she agreed to let me review it! So without further ado I would like for you to meet the Beatles…

Beatles AIO

To be honest, I was a little skeptical at first. I have been curious about cloth diapers for a few years now, and I have been debating whether or not to use them for my future children. Being sent the cloth diaper above has showed me that there is so much more versatility to using cloth vs. disposable. One of the things that I struggled with the most on why I didn’t want to use cloth {at first} was the mere fact that I didn’t want to wash poopy diapers. I felt a little better after reading this statement on Green Mountain Diapers, that stated:
Here's our favorite method: Run a cold wash cycle first. Then hot wash on regular cycle. Extra rinse. That's it. Easy!
This seems really easy! Here is what April has to say about her diapers and her store:

------------------------------------------------
Your diaper will come to you in the smallest rise setting. To adjust simply unsnap, and re snap in the appropriate rise setting. All fabrics have been prewashed, so your diaper is ready for use. As with all cloth diapers, it will continue to gain absorbency through 3 – 5 washes. As this diaper has what is considered a layer of “hidden PUL” it is recommended that the diaper not be used for long naps or overnight as some wicking may occur making it uncomfortable for baby.
Care: Unsnap the soaker. Machine wash warm, extra rinse; tumble dry low or line dry. Use cloth diaper friendly detergents (Rockin Green, Tiny Bubbles etc.) and no fabric softeners.
Contents: Outer fabric , 100% cotton, Polyurethane laminate inner ( to maintain waterproof capabilities), 100% organic cotton Sherpa inner. Soaker pad and booster made with unbleached terry bamboo.
A brief note about april’s baby…
I strive to make adorable and eco friendly items for babies and their mamas. I am a mom to three amazing children aged 5, 2, and 8 months. I am a cloth diaper advocate who maintains that cloth diapering can be easy, affordable and fun. When I started cloth diapering I was not out to save the world. I did it hesitantly upon my physician's suggestion that it may solve my daughter’s continuous urinary tract infections. She went through every test imaginable and the physician felt that it could be the chemicals in the disposable diapers giving her trouble. How could I not give it a try?
From there, I fell in love. I am excited to share my love of cloth with others. I bought a sewing machine and taught myself how to sew. After a little experimenting, I decided to sell my creations for other to enjoy. Every day I try to improve upon the choices and decisions I make for both the Earth and my family. I also give back. For every sale made, I put $0.10 towards cloth diapering a baby in need.
I ask that if the diaper has any life left in it when you are finished using it, that you pass it along to a friend, family member or donate it to a local women’s shelter or midwife practice.
From my family to yours...
------------------------------------------------

What I love about my AIO diaper…

- It has the Beatles fabric!
- It is soft against baby’s skin
- It has enough absorbency without making the diaper too “thick”
- It grows with baby from newborn to the toddler year
- It saves money on buying disposable diapers

What I dislike about my AIO diaper…

- This doesn’t really have anything to do with the diaper, but I am still hesitant about washing them after use
- I don’t have the ease of using disposable diapers and throwing them away :]

{This or That} Croak by Gina Damico

Croak (Croak, #1)
Sixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby has sucker-punched her last classmate. Fed up with her punkish, wild behavior, her parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than that of shoveling manure.
He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach her the family business.

Lex quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated entirely by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. Along with her infuriating yet intriguing partner Driggs and a rockstar crew of fellow Grim apprentices, Lex is soon zapping her Targets like a natural born Killer.
Yet her innate ability morphs into an unchecked desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she’s forced to Kill a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. So when people start to die—that is, people who aren’t supposed to be dying, people who have committed grievous crimes against the innocent—Lex’s curiosity is piqued. Her obsession grows as the bodies pile up, and a troubling question begins to swirl through her mind: if she succeeds in tracking down the murderer, will she stop the carnage—or will she ditch Croak and join in?

------------------------------

Ninjas or Penguins
I'm not stealthy or athletically inclined in any way. I'm short and loud, and roam far and wide in
search of fish. So, penguin.

Vamps or Weres
Most vamps are pretty emo, right? I'm not great with dealing with all that baggage. I'd probably
just yell at them to get over it, and then end up breaking their fragile, dead hearts. Weres it is. I
like puppies.

Books or Video Games
I see you've deciphered the eternal debate of my marriage. Books, books, books, all the way.
UNLESS we're talking about Portal, which I will happily throw myself into for hours at a time.
I got a little plush Portal turret for Valentine's Day and now he's aimed at me as I work, always
ready to shoot if I start being unproductive.

Coke or Pepsi
I hate soda, so neither. Then again, as a child I used to drink olive juice, so perhaps I don't have
the most sophisticated palette.

Justice or Vengeance
As in, which is the better band name? Vengeance. Vengeance RAWKS.

Red or Black
Red always makes a bold statement. As in, I'm here, I'm awesome, and I slightly resemble a fire
hydrant. So red, all the way. We're talking about funeral attire, right?

Heels or Boots
Even though I am only five feet tall and could use the extra height, I have to go with boots. I'm
big on comfort, and most heels were designed, I think, to make me cry.

Cats or Dogs
Speaking from within my two-cat household, I suppose I'll have to go with our feliney friends.
Because it's not like they're watching me or anything. Or threatening with their scimitar-like
claws. *send help*

Ice cream or Cake
Oh cake. No brainer. Bonus points if it's one of those cookie cakes that aren't really cake, just
a bigass cookie. I used to get those for my birthday parties when I was a kid and would be
bouncing off the wall for days.

Action or Adventure
Adventure! Puzzles! Clues! Mystery! Swashbuckling! Intrigue! Yet MORE puzzles! A series of
clues, each more convoluted and intriguing than the last!

Thanks for having me, and happy reaping reading!

Thanks Gina for stopping by!

{Review} Cicada

Cicada
Summertime for Blair Reynolds and her friends had always been carefree and fun...until the summer they happened upon something that was not human. As they band together in a fight for their lives, Blair's true love becomes something more than human. Something unnatural. And their survival depends entirely upon their ability to keep a secret.
Wow! I was not expecting a story like this one to come from this small 198 page book. The story starts off with a note asking the reader to keep a secret and if they can then read on, but if not the close the book. This did nothing more than make me more intrigued. Blair is the type of girl that doesn't have any friends her own age, but always hangs out with her older brother and his friends. I can relate to this in the fact that I don’t have many friends my same age either. I thought that it was really cool and sweet that her brother did not mind including her in his “group”. Blair is the narrator of this story and I immediately liked her from the beginning. I felt liked we clicked. Basically this is an adrenaline packed story about aliens in a small Texas town. It boarded on a little bit of a thriller side to me and it made sure to keep me on the edge of my seat. I am not a huge fan of thriller, but this was just enough for me. I think that Belle did a marvelous job in crafting this story and she definitely is an author that I will make sure to keep on my radar for future reads :]

{Review} Cobbogoth

Cobbogoth: Book 1

To seventeen-year-old Norah Lukens, the Cobbogothians were just a myth. But after her archeologist uncle's brutal murder, and being asked to translate one of his old research journals for evidence, she begins a journey to discover the truth for herself.
Chasing the myth her uncle was obsessed with, Norah learns that his murder was a cover up for something far more sinister. If she hopes to save others from suffering the same fate he did--including the peculiarly magnetic James Riley--she must head to Iceland in order to find out the truth once and for all.
If she succeeds, she'll gain the one thing she's always longed for.
But if she fails, not even the gods can help her.
--------------------------

I have to admit that when I first read the synopsis up there; I thought to myself that this would be one of those books that I would put on the back burner and will eventually get to hopefully, but when Teen Book Scene decided to put together a tour and asked if I wanted on it; I said yes. When I received the book I just set it off to the side and looked at it every now and then. I really didn't know how to approach it, but sure enough it kept calling to me and I eventually opened it up. And then I was sucked in with no chance of coming back. Once I got my first taste; I caught myself wanting it more and more. It became like a little addition.

This book, by far, tops my top 10 books list! Following Norah through her story why she was trying to discover who she really was and who her uncle was. She really took my emotions on a roller-coaster ride. I even cried at times {this is so not like me}. She is just a typical 17 year old girl, until her uncle's murder. He leaves her a journal of one of his earliest "digs" and she decipher it and tries to find his murderer along with what it is he wants her to know. She encounters some horrendous creatures along the way, goes through some intense moments, finds love just to lose it, and to truly learn who she is and where she belongs.

This is a fun and exciting read, with a lot of unpredictable twists and turns. I would recommend this book to any and everyone that I meet. If you have not read this book already, then what are you waiting go and get it NOW!

"You can't really be courageous without fear, kyndie, for courage is when you act in spite of fear." - Lylend

Most definitely one of the best book's that I've read in 2012!

{Interview + Giveaway} The Immortal Rules

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1)
You will kill. The only question is when.
In the dark days since the insidious Red Lung virus decimated the human population, vampires have risen to rule the crumbling cities and suburbs. Uncontested Princes hold sway over diminished ranks of humans: their "pets." In exchange for their labor, loyalty and of course, their blood, these pets are registered, given food and shelter, permitted to survive.
Unregistered humans cling to fringes, scavenging for survival. Allison Sekemoto and her fellow Unregistereds are hunted, not only by vampires, but by rabids, the unholy result of Red Lung-infected vampires feeding on unwary humans. One night, Allie is attacked by a pack of rabids, saved by an unlikely hero...and turned vampire.
Uncomfortable in her undead skin, Allie falls in with a ragtag crew of humans seeking a cure, or cures: for Rabidism and for Vampirism. She's passing for human...for now. But the hunger is growing and will not be denied. Not for friendship—not even for love.

---------------------------

After writing the Iron Fey series for so many years, how difficult was it to immerse yourself in a futuristic world filled with vampires, rabids and an enslaved human race?

It was...very different. I think the hardest thing for me was the fact that this story does take place in the real world -- a futuristic, vampire-infested world, but the real world nonetheless. Things had to make sense, for example: how far can a large group walk in a single day if there were no roads, they were going through thick woods, and there were children in the group? I had to have logical reasons for everything; I couldn't just make something work "because of faery magic," lol.

Just like Meghan Chase in the Iron Fey series, the main character in The Immortal Rules, Allison Sekemoto, is a “take charge and kick butt” kind of girl. Is this intentional? What woman – real or fictional, alive or deceased – do you look up to or admire?

Yes, Allison comes from a very different world than Meghan Chase. Meghan's upbringing was pretty normal; Allison grew up among vampires and monsters, where every day was a fight to live, so she couldn't afford to be weak. While Meghan had to learn to "take charge and kick butt," Allison's first impulse is stab first, talk later. As for female role models, the first that comes to mind--when it comes to kicking vampire butt, anyway -- is Buffy Summers. Thank you, Joss Whedon, for making me love feisty, snarky, heroines who can dust all sorts of nasties but who also look good in a cheerleading outfit. ;)

You mention in your acknowledgements in The Immortal Rules that at the beginning of your writing career you promised yourself you wouldn’t write a vampire book. What changed your mind?

Well, there were already so many really good books about our favorite bloodsuckers, so many stories and ideas, I thought I didn't have anything new to add to the masses. I was actually toying with a post-apocalyptic YA novel when my agent mentioned I might want to try writing a vampire series. I wasn't intrigued with the idea at first, but then I thought about combining vampires with the post-apocalyptic novel and then rest sort of fell into place.

Allison claims she hates vampires and believes they are monsters yet when faced with a choice of die or become one, she becomes a vampire. Would you have made that same decision?

Me personally? No. I'm like Zeke in the belief that there is something better waiting for me beyond this life, and I just have to do my best until it’s time for me to go. Besides, I love pizza and Mountain Dew too much to give it up.

Who do you think the most complex character is in The Immortal Rules?

Probably Kanin, Allie's sire. He's a vampire who has made his peace about being a monster, yet chooses to live by his own set of moral rules. He warns Allison about getting too close to humans, yet he does not kill unless he absolutely has to. He is tormented about something in his past that he refuses to share with anyone. He is certainly the most mysterious of all the characters, if not the most complex.

How many books will be in the Blood of Eden series? When will the next book be coming out?

At the moment, there are three books planned, with the second coming out sometime next spring, after the release of the new Iron Fey series this fall.

Before you starting writing full time you were a professional dog trainer. Do the professions share any similarities?

Lol, well you have to think on your feet a lot. And some of the small dogs could be compared to tiny snapping goblins, but writing requires less dodging skills, though perhaps the same amount of creativity and problem solving.

When starting a new series, like Blood of Eden, do you have the entire series mapped out in detail or do you let the story develop book by book?

I have a high point that I write toward in each story; I know this and this has to happen, but getting from point A to point B usually develops as I go along.

What book have you read and re-read, and read yet again?

Any of the Harry Potter books.

Favorite song to play when writing a fight scene?

My "favorites" change daily. Right now its "Awake and Alive" by Skillet.

Worst job?

Working a kiosk in the mall during Christmas. It sold glass figurines, and the maneuvering space around the hundreds of very breakable merchandise was quite small. I was like a bull in a china shop.

Best vacation spot?

Walt Disney World

Sweets or salty?

Sweet.

One thing most people don’t know about you – and would never guess!

I used to play the flute when I was a kid. I was really good at it too, but my instructor stopped teaching to have a family, and I never went back to it.

Pampered Chef {Feature}

Tonight I want to introduce you all to Carol, a Pampered Chef Consultant. She has kindly sent me the following items to feature on Ashley Suzanne, as well as donated a set of each item for one lucky reader. Find out how to enter at the end of the post.

DSCN1625

Before I go into detail for each product here is a little bit more information about Pampered Chef.
The Pampered Chef®, founded in 1980 by Doris Christopher and part of the Berkshire Hathaway family of businesses, is the premier direct seller of high-quality kitchen tools. The Pampered Chef's sales force of Independent Pampered Chef® Consultants offer multipurpose kitchen tools, demonstrate easy food preparation techniques and share recipes that can help you entertain with style and ease - transforming the simple to the spectacular.
Easier to use than a pastry bag and a great way to learn how to decorate. Three easy-squeeze bottles and writing, basket weave and rosette tips let you decorate with different designs and colors at one time. Perfect for frosting, whipped cream and soft cheese. Includes creative decorating ideas and a convenient cleaning brush. Great for kids! Dishwasher-safe.

I was looking, the most, toward using these little tools. I seem to struggle and make messes when using pastry bags. I was a little skeptical at first about using these because I was unsure how easy it would be to fill them with icing. Once I read the instructions it became a lot clearer and it stated that it would be easier to use a spatula or a butter knife. The butter knife worked better for me. It also said to put food coloring into a Ziploc bag with icing and then cut a hole on the corner of the bag and then transfer it to the container. I found this extremely difficult to do, so I just used a cup and mixed some food coloring with icing and then used a butter knife to put into the bottles. I really liked these and was glad that I could use the tips that I previously have. This decorator bottle set comes complete with three tips, couplers, and bottles, and also with a cleaning brush. These are also a lot more easier to clean than I expected.

The easiest way to move foods from the oven or grill to serving platters! Simply slide the stainless lifter under pizzas, appetizers and cakes, then use the angled nylon helper handle to keep your fingers from touching the food. This sturdy duo can even handle deep dish pizzas and cakes up to 5 lbs.! Lifter, 10" x 10". Helper handle, 7" x 2 1/2". Dishwasher-safe.

This mega lifter is so cool! It makes it so much easier to gather more than one cookie off of the cookie sheet then when you use a spatula. I could have really used this gadget while I was baking over the holiday season. I made dozens of cookies and had to move them individually with a spatula. All you do is take the lifter, slide it under the cookies and the use the other scraper to push them together.

Their streamlined modern design is perfectly sized for spice containers. Adjustable sliders create a seal for dry and liquid ingredients, and are removable for easy cleaning. Grooved thumbprints help you move the sliders back and forth for accurate measuring. Set of two: 1/8 tsp.-1 tsp., 1 tsp.-1 tbsp.
Dishwasher-safe.

These adjustable measuring spoons are extremely handy. I hate having to dig through the utensil drawer trying to find the right measuring spoon that I need. This set comes with two spoons, one goes up to a tablespoon and the other goes up to a teaspoon. It will be so much easier now to keep up with these two spoons instead of all the others. When it comes to measuring spoons like this, my first thought is, will it leak or not hold all the substance? Well I am happy to report that these do not leak and they are extremely easy to clean.

The next two items are the cookbook and the spatula. I could not find these on the website so here is the information that Carol gave me.

Our test kitchens create about 400 recipes every year and the Season's
Best Recipe Collection cookbook is published twice a year.  It's only
$1!!! and always includes a nice assortment of recipes including
several entrees at $2 or less per serving and some healthy options.
It's a great deal :-)

The spatula is our small Mix N Scraper and I love it.  It combines all
the best features of a good spatula and a spoon.  We have 3 total
sizes for this item - one bigger, one smaller that is perfect inside
jars.

I don’t usually care for cookbooks because they take up so much room and it is easier to find a recipe you want online in a matter of seconds, but however I do like this little cookbook. It is small enough to flip through and it fits in almost any little nook or cranny.

The spatula is amazing! It is concave a little but not completely and it allows for a great clean scrape around the whole bowl. It is even easier to clean and works great with just about any substance. From cookies to cupcakes.

Overall I really loved these products and I enjoyed playing with each and every one. Here are the treats that I made today by using my Pampered Chef tools.

DSCN1648

Sorry that the picture is not that great. I sorta played around with the different tips. What do you think? Not too bad, huh?

Now the moment you have all been waiting for, the giveaway :]

1.  Leave a comment here on this post telling me what you would make if you are the winner and you are entered to win!  That’s it!  Easy as can be! The winner will be selected via a random drawing using Random.org on Thursday, March 8 2012. Unfortunately shipping logistics being what they are I'm limiting the audience to legal residents of 50 U.S. states, D.C. or Puerto Rico, and you must be at least 18 to win. Pampered Chef Consultants (all levels), individuals living in their homes and their family members are not illegible. No purchase necessary to win; a purchase will not increase your chances of winning. Odds depend on total number of entries. Void where prohibited. This giveaway is strictly provided by me (and not by Pampered Chef Corporate, not by Facebook) For randomly drawn giveaways participants will be selected via random.org and will be posted here and on Facebook. Selectees will have 3 days to contact me and verify eligibility. Should selectee fail to respond in the given time frame or fail to meet eligibility requirements an alternate will be selected.
