{Review} The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister Primrose, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Where to start? I started reading this book because my sister saw the preview for the movie, and then saw this book sitting on my bookshelf and she decided to pick it up. She read it, then my aunt read it, and I read it on my kindle. We continued to read the rest of the series, but I have yet made it to the third book.

With that being said, I must say that this was one of the best books that I have read in a long time. This was fresh, and the characters were so easy to fall in love with. Katniss, is by far my most favorite character ever. She was everything a heroine needs to be, sarcastic, funny, brave, and willing to put others before her self. Her love for her family was truly amazing. I was able to relate to her feelings about Prim, because my sister is the same age, and I would have done the same thing if I was in her situation. Peeta, ohh Peeta, I love me some Peeta. At first I was unsure how I felt about him, but by the time I finished the second book, I was in love with him! He is kind, creative, has an undying love for Katniss, and is unbelievable with his words. Gale. Gale is another story completely. He is strong, brave, and everything that is like Katniss. If Katniss could have a male twin, it would be Gale. Even though he is everything like her, I still believe that he is not the right one for her. He is everything she is, but nothing that she needs.

I loved that this book was fresh and how the story was told. It flowed so easily, and it was page turning. I was reading it one night while taking a bubble bath, and before I knew it my feet was all wrinkley due to being in the tub so long. Honestly, if you are going to read this book {and I highly think you should, trust me it will change your thinking and outlook} make sure to be careful where you read it at, because when you enter the games there is no coming back until the anthem blares.

One more final note – The cast that was picked for the movie, was a dead hit to the characters that I pictured. There was no way that I could have picked a better cast. The only ones that I did not picture like the ones chosen, was Haymitch, Effie, and Cinna. I am just glad that they did not pick Kirsten Stewart or Miley Cyrus as Katniss.

I was super excited to find this book in the package that was sent to me. I have been receiving the Hungry Girl newsletter emails for awhile now and to finally have one of her books, is amazing! She is a really fun character and she gives great advice as well as great tips and swaps for the food that is good for you and the food that you like.

Who is Hungry Girl?

Hungry Girl is not a nutritionist. She's just hungry.

Lisa Lillien (a.k.a. Hungry Girl) is a New York Times best-selling author and the creator of the Hungry Girl brand. She is the founder of www.hungry-girl.com, the free daily email service that entertains and informs hungry people everywhere. Lisa is a typical woman battling the same food issues most females struggle with every day. She considers herself a “foodologist,” not because she has some kind of fancy degree, but because she is obsessed with food –– how wonderful it is, and how much of it she can eat and still fit into her pants.

More than 1,000,000 fans eagerly wait for Hungry Girl’s recipes, food finds, and tips & tricks each weekday. What started as a daily email to friends and family has turned into a nationwide, multimedia phenomenon! In addition to the million-plus die-hard subscribers to her daily emails, Lisa also reaches millions more with weekly columns on WeightWatchers.com and Yahoo!, regular contributions to Redbook magazine, and recurring appearances on television shows like Rachael Ray and Extra.

Lisa is the author of five best-selling cookbooks. The first Hungry Girl book launched in April of 2008. The second book debuted in the #1 spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list and remained on the list for forty-four weeks. Her third book also debuted at #1 on the Best Sellers list and remained there for three weeks! The latest Hungry Girl book, Hungry Girl 300 Under 300: 300 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Dishes Under 300 Calories, launched in the number-one spot and stayed on the list for more than a dozen weeks.

Lisa recently wrapped production of season 2 of the Hungry Girl television show, which airs on both Food Network and Cooking Channel. On the show, Lisa whips up recipes, shares tips & tricks in the kitchen, and is out and about helping people navigate the supermarket aisles and survive tricky eating situations.

Most of them say that Hungry Girl is the girl who lost 235lbs by eating junk food. She says that you can lose up to 18lbs a month by doing simple swaps and slimming down some recipes.

I really like Hungry Girl’s newest book, Supermarket Survival, because it is small enough to take with you to the store. The pages are also attractive and colorful so you don’t get bored reading it. It comes with a lot of tips and trends that will help you while shopping for groceries. It goes over every category and basically every aisle by aisle. It also comes complete with recipes and a shopping list at the back.

I would recommend Hungry Girl Supermarket Survival to those who need the extra push and who need to know just what to eat and not to eat.

When I first saw this book, I completely and immediately judged it by its cover and just thought that I would probably never read it, but since I am trying to overcome that judgment I decided to give it a try. The Apocalypse Gene is definitely one of those books that you cannot judge from the outside in. It has so much personality and amazing characters that I completely forget that I am reading. From day one it started out a little rocky, just because I was trying to get a feel for the scenery. I have never read a book like this in this genre before, so it was a little new to me.
Olivya is one of the main characters who happens to live on Hospice Row with all the Good As Dead’s, which she calls the GADS. Mikah is the other main character and he lives at the Complex with other Kindred Initiated beings. The story flows from Olivya’s POV to Mikah’s POV. It is like little cliff hangers throughout the story as we focus on what Mikah is doing while Olivya was doing something else. At first I was unsure if I would like that, but it takes you back to the same scene so that you do not get confused, and this is what keeps you guessing throughout the whole story.

Readers who enjoy action and adventure stories, with a little awkward romance and total butt-kicking is sure to love The Apocalypse Gene.

This rating is based on the fact that I did not completely finish the book. I am sure that it will pick up and eventually work its way up to a 5.

As I mentioned in the review. I am not a big fan of the cover.

Book Excerpt

Excerpt – Chapter One – The Good As Dead: Olivya has just learned that her mother plans to upgrade their home-based hospice center to euthanasia, a service called “deliverance”. GAD is short for “Good-As-Dead”. The first “customer” as arrived:
Deliverance. Olivya hated that slithery word, that thin euphemism. Why not call it what it was?
Murder. Her legs tensed, straining to run through the front door, down the street, east to Lake Michigan, and keep on going, right into the cool deep waters. Instead, she crept to the foyer, careful to stay out of Mama's line of sight. The new GAD lay mummy-bound in a pale blue blanket. This one had no intention of hanging out in a tranquilized coma or happily zoned on Hypno-Peace. He just wanted out. She wanted to look into the soul of this death-wisher. Did it take courage to broadcast that invitation to the Reaper? You are cordially invited to escort me to oblivion. The sickly sweet stench of diseased flesh and stale urine wafted from the GAD. His sweat-soaked orange hair lay like worms on his forehead. Straps held his wrists to the side rails. His lips fluttered with each labored breath. She frowned. He looked just like all the others. Nothing special- shrunken, coma-tranked, and reeking. Was he a coward or a hero? The answer didn't show in his face, but she could find it in his aura.
A chill breeze rippled, raising gooseflesh on her arms. Maybe the old Reaper was already standing right there, ready to claim his prize. If she allowed herself to fully Sight, would she see Death's black robes, its bottomless eyes rimmed in bone? She wanted to curse it, spit in its hideous face. Like Papa, this newcomer had set out a welcome mat for Death. Mama would be furious if she caught her gaping, disobeying orders to stay away. Olivya would have to hurry, but a moment was all she needed. She closed her eyes, lifted her defenses and willed the Sight to come. Colors, shapes and lights swirled behind her lids. She compressed them into a single point of white-light deep inside her mind, then she opened her eyes. The GAD's aura, at first vague and wavy, sharpened into view. Despite the drug-induced coma, misery rose from him in sluggish waves. The dull red of malignancy throbbed against a background of greenish-gray - similar to the other Good-As-Deads, but somehow weightier. Intuition told her to look more closely. Faint hues darted behind that auric death-shroud, ghosts of the man's former emotions. A streak of robin's egg blue, shimmers of peach. An eerie feeling came over her. Something looked familiar about this combination of gentle pastels in this particular pattern. The face of a smiling man rose in her mind's eye, one who had always been patient with the friendless psychic girl. Mr. Gragg. Her Seventh Grade English teacher from the old brick and mor
tar. Could this be him? It looked nothing like him. Mr. Gragg had been thick-muscled and robust, his hair a riot of bright orange ringlets. Yes. That pastel aura was Mr. Gragg's. She recognized the colors of his unique, unflagging kindness. Why him? Then again, so many in the world had cancer. Why not him?
Olivya caught Mama's voice in the kitchen. “Any family?”
“Not any more,” the deliveryman said.
*** Excerpt – Chapter Two - Mikah: Mikah, an unitiated member of the Kindred clan, dreads his encounters with the Kindred leader, a demon hybrid who goes by the name of Prime . . .
It wasn't just the thought of Initiation and what it might do to him that made Mikah sick with
dread. It was the fact that he'd have to be alone with Prime, close to the monster's twisted energy and constantly morphing shape, that hideous creature near enough to touch. He hated thinking about that cellar-dwelling thing, yet his presence permeated the Complex. Prime. The Ancient One. Vile. Disgusting. Sometimes at night, Mikah would gaze out his bay window, dreaming about what it might be like to plunge through the glass and ride the gravity express straight down to eternal nothingness. He'd catch a glimpse of a lurching form among the trees, a darker dark in the shadows, oozing through the expanse of park-like grounds that joined the Complex with the shores of Lake Michigan. He’d spy Prime, the monster, slipping along the beach in random directions, as if lost. That shape sometimes caught the moonlight, a pale glow darting among the perfectly manicured hedges at the Complex boundaries. Prime. No boogieman. Real. He'd haunted Mikah's nightmares since he was a little kid. Lately, the changes had accelerated. Prime was growing restless, leaving the Complex more and more often, capering and shrieking about the grounds. Just a week ago, Mikah caught a rare sight of Prime inside the Complex, slinking past an open door in one of the first floor parlors. He looked thick and clumsy. Then yesterday, Mikah saw the beast again. He'd changed, become taller, oddly flexible, and lighter on his feet. Only Prime's brown, shapeless robes stayed the same, and the absurdly long black patent leather dress shoes sticking out beneath his hems.
“You should not put your attention on him,” Changarai said
.“My shield is up. How did you know I was thinking of Prime?”
“You wear the same expression you did as a toddler when Prime was near. One doesn't need psionic ability to recognize fear.”
“Yeah, well. It's just another thing that separates me from all of you. I fear him. You worship
him.”
“You will too,” Changarai said. “Soon.”
No way would Mikah stay alone with that shambling horror while they're at the Gathering. Then he relaxed. He wouldn't be alone tonight. He'll be with Olivya.
*** Except – Chapter Three – That Familiar Malevolence: This a scene from Olivya and Mikah’s first meeting face to face. They have escaped a Shivpack, a gang of vicious street thugs, by sliding into a rushing stream that runs through the abandoned Lincoln Park Zoo . . .
They barely heard the last as the stream swept them away. After what seemed like a long time,,they reached a sturdy bush on a muddy bank. They grabbed it and pulled themselves up, soaked and shivering. The grassy sides of the moat, though wet, were less steep here. Olivya scrambled to the top, Mikah close behind. Her thigh burned where the fence had caught her jeans. She peeled back the torn denim. A deep scratch, puffed and red, but the bleeding had stopped. Mikah swiped at the splotches of mud and grass from his clothes. Olivya checked him out beneath half-lowered lids. The moonlight illuminated him, as if his strange aura attracted and magnified its glow. She'd never seen anyone so beautiful, almost pretty, but rugged and rough. His skin was the color of sweet tea, a pale creamy brown, incredibly smooth. Latino? Indian? No. Arab. Maybe Native American? No way to tell. He was all races, yet no race. Strong jaw, full lower lip, shining black hair, broad shoulders. He removed his light cotton jacket to wring it out. He wore a form-fitting black T-shirt, now wet and plastered to his smooth, wide chest. His torso V'ed down to narrow hips and long-muscled legs. She glanced back up to his face to find those periwinkle blue-violet eyes staring straight into hers. She looked away, busily rubbed mud and grass off herself. Just great. She was supposed to be angry with him and he had just caught her, well, ogling. And she was furious at him again, doubly so, for making her feel embarrassed. He was the one who should be humiliated. After all, hadn't she just caught him in a lie? Didn't he scare her half to death with that insane light show?
He didn't even care that her leg was cut, and it hurt like hell, and, and− “You little liar!” She shoved her face into Mikah's. “How do you move that way - blurry and super-quick? What the hell did you do to Ripper? And why did Mako run away like a frightened dog when you barely touched him?”
Mikah shrugged and sighed. “Olivya, it's complicated.”
“Use small words.”
“I'm not entirely human.”
Olivya ground her teeth. More lies. She watched his aura, waiting for it to turn lemon-green
with deceit . . . and waited. It gleamed steady, a truthful apricot-orange. She took a step back. “O-o-okay?”
“I sensed you were special the first time our holo-sims chatted,” he said, “but I didn't realize how talented you are, how intense your Sight. I wonder if you even know.”

My Thoughts
{My reviews are SPOILER-Free}

ashley-emoticons-unique ashley-emoticon-ha ashley-emoticons-heartwarm ashley-emoticons-pageturner

When I first agreed to participate in this tour with the review of After Obsession, I was a little hesitant due to the fact that it was my first demon possession book, ever. Plus I am a Christian, and because I know how real demon possession is, I was a little worried that it may unnerve my faith. However with this book that was not a problem. To me it seemed more as a paranormal romance that a complete demon possession book. Aimee and Alan are from two different places. Alan is part Navajo and Aimee is from Maine. However when they meet the chemistry is so strong that they begin to feel like they were made for each other.

I loved the characters in this book. At first I was a little worried that I wouldn’t like Aimee, because she seemed a little flat, but throughout the story that first impression was depleted. After Aimee meet Alan she immediately became a better character and was not afraid to fight for what she believed in, even if it meant losing her very sanity. She was so worried that she would end up like her mother, but was able to overcome that feel and be a hero that she was called to be. Alan on the other hand. I liked him from the very get go of the story. He started off being passionate and I could not help, but relate him to Jacob from the Twilight series. I think it was more of his macho-ness and the Indian blood in him. I also loved the way he was protected of his women-folk. The next characters that I really enjoyed were Gramps and Benji. They were so much fun and acted just like a married couple with their fussiness to each other. Or as Aimee told us their crankiness. CHEETO :] Courtney was an okay character to me, it was a little hard to get to know her with the whole demon possession going on with her.

I also couldn’t help, but to notice how this book and Alan’s beliefs and practices mimicked my own. Here are a few ways that they were a like. I will do Alan’s compared to mine. Great Spirit – My God/Heavenly Father, Mediation {to understand and hear} – Prayer, Spirit Guide – Holy Spirit/Bible, Spirit Warrior – My faith and the fact I am Christ like and a warrior in this never ending spiritual warfare that is waging now between Light and Dark, between the Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of Darkness. Rewarded by living eternally in  Heaven or Hell. Which side will you choose to stand up and fight in, or will you be a passerby and give up your crowns of glory?

I like the cover a lot. From the pretty girl to the font of the text.

From the author of the popular Weather Warden series comes the debut of an exciting new series set in Morganville, Texas, where you would be well advised to avoid being out after dark.

College freshman Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation. When Claire heads off-campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don't show many signs of life, but they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.

My Thoughts

ashley-emoticons-action ashley-emoticons-hearts ashley-emoticon-ha ashley-emoticons-pageturner

Basic story – Girl moves to college that her parents want her to attend. She hates it from the start, not to mention the fact that she is only 16 so she sticks out like a red m&m surrounded by brown ones. Another thing that is sure to make her hate it even worse is the “popular” girl pummeling her everyday. She hates the dorms and fears her life so she decides to find a room to rent. She is completely innocent and just needs someone to protect her. Little does she know that getting beat up at school is no where near as frightening, then what happens after the sun sets.

I feel like a mostly relate to Eve than Claire. Eve was more of a ‘yeah lets kick so vampire booty’ and Claire was a ‘lets just sit here and try to pretend like it is not happening’ kind of girl. I kept getting frustrated at her because she was all whiny and wimpy and all like I can’t do this, I don’t wanna do this. Where as Eve took a hold of the situation and was not afraid to stand up for what she wanted and believed was right. Eve has some flaws whereas Claire had some good things about her too. Eve’s only flaw may have been that she did not stand up and tell the guy that she was in love with him. Claire may have been a wimp at times, but in her defense she was only sixteen and was way smart enough to be in college already, so you know that came with a pick on me sign on its own. At times where Claire was lacking in character and personality the next minute she was pouring liquid nitrogen on a few vamps that she met while breaking into a door that was close. So yeah she may have been a wuss at times, but at other times she was a pure evil genius. The other two characters were Michael and Shane. They were brothers in all aspects except biologically. Michael was the “father” of the household. He made sure everyone was safe in his jurisdiction and was always the calm, level-headed one that always knew just what to say and do in times of trouble. He is also a total cutie. Shane was the shoot ‘em up ask questions later kind of guy. He was the muscle and legs of the household and was by far my favorite book crush in this series.

The plot of this story held my attention from the beginning and kept it there until the very end. I found myself laughing out loud and getting upset all in one sitting. The end of the story leaves you with such a major cliff hanger that it makes you look all through the last few pages for any more of the story that may be lurking around. I do not recommend reading this book without the second one to back you up.

CR - 3

I like the cover. However it is not jaw dropping, but I do like the mysterious behind it and the fact that it does not show the girl’s face. That way we can imagine our own characters and not already have an image in our minds. I also like the feel of the cover and the mistiness behind it.
